The son of Matthew Ferdinand and Margaret (Hanna) Kreisle, James Edwin Kreisle (1918-2002) grew up in Austin, Texas, and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1942. The following year, he enlisted as a medical officer in the U. S. Army, training at Camp Hood and Camp Maxey in Texas. In 1944, Kreisle joined the 45th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), codenamed Deliver, and shipped out to Europe, serving under the codename Deliver-6 in France, Luxembourg, and Germany.
